The mood at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had allowed ten goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. A Season Unraveling?
Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been any cohesion maintaining its structure from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach during the off-season, only for him to later acknowledge that the management had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were set to be hit with for financial irregularities. Speculation that he could resign were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized during matches as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it has been hard to determine if they are improving or imploding.
Cancellieri's Unforeseen Return
A single player continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this season. He spent last season at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, Lazio were attempting to extend his stay temporarily. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. The club couldn't risk to thin their squad lacking backup options.
He joined originally during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league with the club in 2022-23, almost all of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."
Discovering His Natural Fit
Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to work out the exact type of the player's talent. Billed as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward.
