Around fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then discovered many other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials state preliminary tests show the fluid was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no clue as to its source; authorities are presently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the event," they stated.
City officials stated they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have asked to the community for details.
A high-ranking official stated the vandalism made him stunned and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he stated on online, mentioning the death of nine victims by a gunman targeting individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
